Steampunk Research

Steampunk

Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that was created in the 1980’s. Steampunk often features heavy machinery that is operated by steam power, hence the origin of the name. The art style often portrays modern inventions in an old fashion style. For example a popular setting is often the Victorian era.

Examples of Steampunk in popular culture is TV, Movies and Video Games that use the art style. Movies such as Hellboy and Sherlock Holmes use Steampunk. The Video Game series Bioshock is based on the style of steampunk and is set in the early 1900’s.

Here is some concept art taken from the game Bioshock Infinite. As you can see this would be a 1900’s style version of a robot-human hybrid. It appears to made out of brass which is a popular trait for Steampunk art style. The main colour used is brown and orange to create a rust effect on the robot to create the illusion of using old materials to create the machine.

This is another example of some artwork in the style of Steampunk. As you can see it is a Steampunk style version of the superhero Batman. Again it has a mechanical feel to the picture as there is a lot of gears and cogs that are visible within the picture. The image has a sepia filter which creates an old photo style effect that Steampunk is based on. This image is also set within the victorian era but of a modern superhero.
Another feature of Steampunk being shown here is the victorian style goggles that Batman is wearing, also the detail style on the chest piece he is wearing is very old fashioned.

The buildings in the background are also victorian style in what appears to be a church as religion was very popular in the victorian era.
